Crowdfunding Campaign: 8th Step
by Ray Castro
(Cincinnati, OH USA)
8th Step is a self-sufficient fund raising project based on the 8th step of the traditional 12 Step program: "made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
Our goals for this inaugural campaign may seem somewhat modest, but we believe that they can have a profound effect on the lives of the people we wish to help. With our chip and key tag, we seek a way to provide support to those in recovery-a way to remind them of the people and institutions who are part of their journey.
The other component of 8th Step is its role as a fundraiser; targeting charities that not only work with those in recovery, but organizations that provide support and guidance to those who may have a family member or friend struggling with substance abuse.
The proceeds for this campaign will go to Cincinnati Union Bethel's. Off The Streets program. Off the Streets (OTS) assists women involved in prostitution move towards safety, recovery, empowerment, and community reintegration. OTS provides a safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental environment for women who are involved in prostitution and helps them explore positive life changes. Focus areas include emergency needs, housing, medical care, mental health, substance abuse, education, and employment.
Women participate in daily education and support groups that assist them in their recovery and empowerment process and address topics such as life skills, health and well-being, relationships, and self-esteem. Referrals are also made to community resources as needed.
Off the Streets was a 2008 National Mutual of America Community Partnership Honoree, and the recipient of the 2007 Over-the-Rhine Chamber of Commerce: Non-Profit of the Year award, and the 2006 Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations Program Excellence Award. They are one of the few programs in the country to address this population of women.
